What if Jesus
popped down,
just to look around,
wearing jeans
with ripped knees,
a Yankees baseball cap,
backwards,
vintage Vuarnet sunglasses,
and suede Birkenstock slides?
Would he be recognized,
would anyone care
what he choose to wear?
And what if God
came down, too,
looked around,
saw some stuff
he thought wasn't up to snuff,
decided to stick around,
incognito though,
so he dressed up
like a rodeo clown,
head to toe,
full make up,
striped suspenders,
oversized overalls,
bright yellow boots,
big red nose,
on a mission
to right some woes,
one cowboy at a time,
just to get things going.
Wonder if anyone
would notice
the man behind
the big red nose?
And what if the Lord
too, took notice,
looked down,
suffered some FOMO
and decided she had to go
check things out,
see what all
the hubbub's about?
Unbeknownst to anyone,
she occassionally, stealthily,
sneaks down with her band,
Sissy & The Choir Boys,
that being her, The Father,
The Son & The Holy Ghost,
performs a set or two, at most,
just to get a read on things.
They haven't made
an Earthly appearance
since their big gig
in the Gospel Tent
at JazzFest, first year
post pandemic.
And they can crank it up
but Sissy likes to keep a lid on things,
keep the Choir Boys in check,
in case they need
to make a quick exit!
It's rare they collectively
transcend the spiritual,
all appearing here
in the physical,
but all seems
to be tittering down here
on the big blue-green rock,
all wobbly and out of whack,
evil forces playing havoc,
increasing fear in all
that it's all
heading off the tracks.
So, they descend,
work together to comprehend,
make some amends,
hit the ripcord
and re-ascend,
re-affirming, yes,
free will's still at work.
But is it working?
Nicholas Kristof says
though bad things
keep happening
broader trends show
our lot is improving.
It's just hard to see it
through the headlines,
the noise, the smoke,
and the vitriol.
Maybe the guy
in the ripped jeans
and the one wearing
the big red nose
and the lady hitting
the high notes
should stick around
a bit longer!
Maybe they would start a new political party and sweep the November Elections. I would advocate for that! Love the imagery here, Rich. Thanks for a much-needed grin today.
Laughed out loud at how brilliantly specific this part was:
"They haven't made
an Earthly appearance
since their big gig

at JazzFest, first year
post pandemic."
Nice work
