Favored Friend

Good at letting me know when it's time to go

Silence is 
my favored friend
these days,
they don't try
to fix a thing,
they just sit 
and listen.

I don't ask
much of them,
just that
they're there
and patient
and understanding.

They don't ask
much of me, either,
just that I 
carve out time for them
and let them wrap
their arms around me, tightly,
and that I sink 
deeply into them.

We have a lot
in common,
like enjoying sunrises
and sitting on the bench
at the top of the hill
overlooking the city
and the bay,
whether it's foggy
or a crystal clear day.

They're good, too,
at letting me know
when it's time to go,
when we've shared 
enough for now,
when there's other stuff
to tend to.
